I sit on the fence ..

It is the week before the Queens Birthday long weekend, more many just another excuse for a day off but in the United Kingdom they celebrated the occasion on the weekend that has just passed in a flourish of pomp, celebration and colour as the Commonwealth celebrates Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.

What to say about this, well frankly I sit on the fence about the Republic v Commonwealth debate. Australia is one of 54 countries in the Commonwealth and in 1999 there was a referendum about Australia becoming
a republic. The referendum like most was unsuccessful in its resolve. At the time voting was a very new experience for me. I think there had been an election of some nature (ie state or federal) which I can't recall. But yes I think I did vote as AYE, I want a republic but the question is then who would make a good leader for this role. What I do remember is many of the names being thrown about were celebrities of their given field. There were politicians, sports stars and entertainers and at that time all of them had little relevance to leadership of a country. While I would like a republic one with a well known identity is not my choice on any level.

I'm not a monarchist either but sort of have a soft spot for the old lady, her sometimes inappropriate husband and their dysfunctional tribe. William as King is a romantic idea but people forget that for that to happen dear Queen Lizzie has to drop of the perch and Charles will then reign as the order proclaims. It won't be happening for a while either when you recall that the lads great granny lived to be 101 for #@$* sake!

But what is troubling me more is for the pat year I have been having a recurrent on and off dream that amongst this year of celebration the Queen has/will/does drop dead. I don't know why I'm experiencing this dream and if you can interpet it I want to hear from you.

I can not foresee what the end result of this dream is but I imagine if did occur we would all mourn her passing it with a mix of woe and disbelief because she has been sitting in the golden chair for so long it's now very few can say she ain't a good sort.
